BERRYRANGE LTD, ONE OF THE UK’S LEADING SPECIALIST CONTRACTORS FOR SHEET PILING

WHO WE ARE

Pre-Augering & Probing

Pre-augering is a commonly used technique associated with sheet piling which is carried out in advance of sheet pile installation to disturb difficult ground the piles will be installed into. By using a flight that is narrower than the width of the pile wall all the disturbance is kept within the wall profile and thus does not have an effect on the pile wall design and wall integrity. The process of installing the pile will have the effect of reconstituting the ground.

Generally, the ground is pre-augered to the full depth of the pile but the technique can be used solely to penetrate a dense band of soil. When used as an advanced operation to silent piling using our WP150 or JZ100 Silent piler, dense granular strata, which tend to overlay clays, can be driven through, and a reduction in water usage will also result.

Water Lubrication

Water Lubrication and/or Jetting is a technique that aids pile installation and is generally associated with silent and vibration-free piling methods. Dense granular materials and all clays above the firm are difficult to penetrate by purely jacking the pile. Lubrication is used when other techniques to reduce driving forces are not possible. Water usage is always kept to a minimum.

Clutch Welding

When sheet piles are required to prevent water penetration through the pile line, clutch welding is an option. The method used is to apply a weld to the pile clutch after the piles have been installed. This is a sealing weld and not a structural weld. With the slackness in pile clutches varying between different manufacturers, the gap to be filled will also vary.

When the gap is beyond a reasonable amount for an economic number of weld runs we will weld a narrow plate in place to fill the gap. When welding a clutch that is in water-bearing strata the weld must be carried out from top to bottom. If the reverse is tried there will be a risk of the weld leaking. Several associated techniques can be employed to aid the prevention of water ingress, including a temporary sealant applied to the pile clutch before driving or a hydrophilic material that will expand on contact with water to seal the pile clutch, if a high level of impermeability is required.

Clutch Sealants

A sealed sheet piled wall provides a safe and economic solution where the control of groundwater could be a problem. It is also effective as a containment barrier to prevent leachate ingress or leakage at a site perimeter.

Sealant systems are designed to stop water from penetrating through the pile clutches, usually in conjunction with other techniques such as clutch welding or a fully bonded waterproof barrier and primarily work in different ways. They either form a seal between two particular points on adjacent piles or replace the fill in the void between the piles.

Shear Studs

There can be no guarantee that concrete cast against sheet piles will adequately adhere, especially when it is only cast against one side of the piles as in the case of a basement slab. There is normally a requirement for the pile and concrete to form an integral structure for load transfer.

Reinforcement may be required to be welding to the piles, but a more common technique is to use shear studs welding to the sheet piles in a grid pattern in the concrete zone to provide a positive bond. Varying sizes of shear studs can be provided and welding including the usually specified 19mm diameter x 130mm long.

Puddle Flange

A Puddle Flange is a technique that can serve two purposes. Firstly it is used in conjunction with clutch welding and other waterproofing techniques to form a barrier between the existing ground and the new build.

A steel plate is welded to the piles, usually mid-span of the basement slab, and before the basement concrete pour a hydrophilic strip is glued to the Puddle Flange on the horizontal and occasionally the vertical face of the pile, which expands in the concrete pour forming a waterproof barrier.

Secondly, the Puddle Flange can be used instead of or in conjunction with shear studs to add the load transfer from a capping beam load through to the basement slab.
